Digging for Gold

We're renovating an old house in Toronto. Our neighbors are lucky enough to have the original tall baseboards, the stained glass and other original features. We don't.

But while gutting the basement, we looked up and saw an original cast iron vent that had been tiled over (on the main floor). It was gorgeous. So, I began ripping out the many layers of flooring on the main floor of the house to get to the vent.

Getting this vent out probably took four hours of hammering through the tiles. The neighbors came over to complain about the noise but I think this vent was worth it.

Similar vents sell for a couple hundred dollars on eBay or at local salvage shops. But I love know that this one came from our house and we just had to do a little digging to get it.
